Week 8 - Hong Kong's Amended Copyright Law

Apart from educational purpose, it is important to set copyright law for protecting the writers and the publishers. We need to respect people’s work as their “Intellectual Property”.

I think that sometimes it is quite confusing to decide the meaning of "reasonable portions of copyright works". How many pages of the book can we photocopy? Is there any percentage limitations?

It is interesting to find out that teacher cannot play a DVD of a currently shown movie in class, but what about those not currently shown? Actually, many of the DVDs we can buy in the market are quite new but not currently shown.

As the development of IT is quite fast, people can download updated movies, dramas and pop songs by BT. It is quite difficult to stop people infringing the right of the owners.

You're right - it is now easer than ever for people to share, remix and redistribute copyright works, without the knowledge of the copyright holder. All of this has made publishers and other rights holders push to strengthen the existing legislation (i.e. get better protection for their rights and limit the amount of sharing and distribution that people can legitimately do).

However when information is shared on the internet this can often lead to violations of copyright laws, and that's one of the reasons that Google gets into so much legal trouble.

I suppose we have to ask ourselves what sort of activities we can engage in, to make use of the new media available (for example this blog) without crossing the line into copyright infringement. I'd like to hear your thoughts.
